"The Siege" (theater) in the Burghof / Stieglkeller

The play "The Siege" is about the great peasant uprising in the province of Salzburg and the siege of Fortress Hohensalzburg by the rebels in 1525. Despite all the poetic freedom, the plot follows the historical, precisely researched tradition. The story also stands for the general relationship between rulers and ruled, then in the time of serfdom, as today in the age of globalization. To mark the 500th anniversary of this historical event, the play will be premiered in the summer of 2025 in the courtyard of Fortress Hohensalzburg and in several castles in the province of Salzburg.
In the early summer of 1525, oppression, restrictions on freedom, fundamental rights and faith lead to a major peasant uprising in the province of Salzburg, where Prince Archbishop
Matthäus Lang rules with an iron fist. After the execution of a peasant from Pinzgau, rebellious peasants with miners from Rauris and Gastein move to Salzburg, occupy the city and besiege the fortress in which the archbishop and his entourage are billeted. This story of power, intrigue, betrayal and survival generally stands for the relationship between rulers and ruled, then in a time of serfdom as well as today in the age of globalization.
To mark the 500th anniversary of this event, the play will be performed in the courtyard of Fortress Hohensalzburg as well as at Castle Mauterndorf, Mauterndorf and the fortress
Kniepass.
