High up on the Mönchsberg, Fortress Hohensalzburg towers above the rooftops of the city. Today, the over 1,000-year-old castle is the landmark of the city of Salzburg and is visited by countless guests from all over the world every year. As one of the main tourist attractions, we are constantly striving to make the fortress, which has grown over the centuries, as accessible as possible for people with special needs. However, due to the historic and often massive construction, this is only possible to a limited extent.
The nearest disabled parking spaces are located at Residenzplatz 9 (6 spaces), Toscaninihof 1 (3 spaces) and Max-Reinhardt-Platz (10 spaces) - the bollards in front of the Festspielhaus and on Mozartplatz can be operated with the Euro key.
Barrier-free access to Fortress Hohensalzburg is possible via the FestungsBahn (link to website FestungsBahn Salzburg AG). The entrance is located at the valley station of the FestungsBahn (Festungsgasse 4). You do not need to register in advance. The footpath to Fortress Hohensalzburg is not barrier-free due to its steepness.
Please note that there are many steps and inclines at the fortress, which make accessibility difficult. The panorama terrace and the bastion in the area of the mountain station are fully accessible. An elevator in the bell tower gives you access to the castle courtyard, the exhibition in the armory, the tavern, the Kuenburg bastion and the marionette museum. The interior of the fortress is not barrier-free.
Barrier-free toilets are located next to the Info Point and inside the fortress restaurant.
People with walking impairments: At the Info Point you will receive tablets with a video tour of the indoor areas.
In the area of the salt magazine, you will find an information board for people with visual impairments.
At the Info Point you will receive tablets with a video guide in sign language.
Assistance dogs are allowed on a leash at Fortress Hohensalzburg.
People with a disability of 50% or more receive reduced admission including one accompanying person on presentation of a disability pass.
