A visit to Hohensalzburg Fortress in the run-up to Christmas is magical. On the way up, more than a hundred traditional Herrnhut stars bathe the Festungsgasse in a romantic sea of lights. Once in the castle courtyard, the tranquil market offers a diverse selection of local arts and crafts, creative gift ideas and Salzburg delicacies. Many locals come to the fortress at least once a year to enjoy the wonderful view over the Christmassy old town with a cup of mulled wine. The market's supporting program is also popular with families. On all opening days, there is a supervised children's program at Atelier Hödlmoser with music, cookie baking, a reading corner and Christmas crafts. On Sunday, November 30 at 3 pm, the Stefani-Perchten will be guests at the fortress. Creepy, but never gruesome, their visit is perhaps the most family-friendly Krampus run in Salzburg.
